These work samples demonstrate project phases as well as completed designs. The names and exact locations of private clients have been removed to protect their privacy.

Residential Design, Jackson, New York

The clients desired a more interesting yard, a bocce court, and less area to maintain. Analyses determined that a wall of forest looming across an expanse of lawn provided little in the way of visual interest, that steep slopes to the west were dangerous to mow, and the nearly level, well drained land to the northeast was ideal for a playing court. The resulting plan substitutes low ground cover that preserves views to the west, while red oaks protect the house from the heat of the western sun in the afternoon. The vegetable garden is moved away from the trees to the south in order to take advantage of the sun in the center of the yard. A bird and butterfly garden is planted along the shady southern border and the barn. The bocce court is sited in grove of trees with an undulating border and fragrant groundcover. View the design.

Residential Design, Bennington, Vermont

The site for this house was created some years ago in the midst of a rare calcareous, red maple-tamarack swamp. This sketch design attempts to extend some of the features of the swamp that still exists nearby, while a south-facing patio, protected by deciduous trees in the summer, allows the property owner to extend the outdoor season in the spring and fall. Master Plan for Poplar Street Landing, Montague, Massachusetts
Prepared for Northeast Utilities

This portage site in a suburban neighborhood on the Connecticut River was dangerous, due to very steep slopes leading to the river, and plagued with invasive plants that threatened the habitat of rare species. The master plan for this site, created with Eric P. Korn at the Conway School of Landscape Design, improves the site so that it is safe, easily accessed, and attractive, provides limited parking that does not encroach on neighbors, and upholds Northeast Utilities' commitment to environmental stewardship. Marbletown 2005 Index of Natural, Cultural, and Historical Resources
Prepared for Marbletown, New York

The index, co-written with David Campolong and Sandy Ross at the Conway School of Landscape Design, was put together using a variety of resources including Geographic Information Systems and public forums. As well as providing an inventory of the town's resources, such as wetlands, the index provides the town with an interactive Overlay Planning Tool that gives residents and planners the ability to weigh the constraints and opportunities presented by the town's resources and help it establish the pattern of future land use. View an excerpt from the report concerning water resources and maps of floodplains, wetlands, and aquifers. All files require Adobe Reader.
